Default Lighting, the Putco harness, and factory Fogs

So, I'll probably be getting the putco headlight harness soon. I know that on the 97+ XJ that came with fog lights, there is an issue where turning on the high beams makes them not turn off until you shut the lights off, then back on, or something rather. Is the fix still to do something with that small wire on the passenger side light plug? or is there a 'better way' now?

Now, i guess, onto the "real" questions. It would be reasonable to assume that if the headlights are wired in a convoluted way which limits the amount of power to them, that the fog lights are also wired in such a way? Is there a kit to wire the fogs up with better wiring for more output, or is the answer just to get rid of it all and use aftermarket? My fog lights currently dont work as the bulbs are busted so i have no ind of idea what OEM fog light output is, but i'm not optimistic (even though fogs aren't meant to put out whole bunches of light)

Finally, my dum-dum question...
On a bulb's wattage (for instance "60/55"), is the first number the wattage for the high beams, or low beams?

thanks

low/high

Get 90/100s

I think the fog lights are okay as far as wiring.

I have a putco harness still in the package that came with a parts jeep. I don't know how much they are but I could probably get it to you cheaper.

The Putco is kinda cheap and the relay connector on mine definitely had some heat going on at one point; the plastic was brown/black and a bit melted. Look for 'H4 ceramic harness' on ebay or amazon instead. Much nicer build and better relays.

Most 90/100 bulbs are less than $10 each on amazon. Aim your housings properly and they should be fine.

As for the fog light issue, I just pulled the relay (or you can bend one of the pins on it) and wired up aftermarket ones since the factory ones didn't work anyway and look kinda small. Used the new wiring to go straight to the factory switch.

Gotcha, the first number is the low beams and the second is the high. Thats what i had thought.

I know you can bypass the fog lights turning off when the high beams are on by bending a tab on the relay. JK, which fogs did you put in? both my bulbs and housings are shot, like ive mentioned, but i dont want to waste my time with junk.
Would be nice if there was a housing that fir there like the H4 conversion for the headlights. I wonder if ZJ or WJ fog light housings would fit...

I went full upgrade and put a pair of 5" PIAAs on my grille guard. They have a wide angle and aren't overly bright.

Go to the second page about half way down and that will show you how to take care of the stock fogs issue if you go with a harness.

1. imo, amazon an octane headlight harness its great quality compared to putco and wires/ relays are beefy.
2. I pulled my fog relay to resolve the issue of headlights staying on, however i believe there is a thread discussing splicing a wire from the passenger plug to the driver. forget if its ground or power but its also an easy fix if you can solder.

Speaking of bulbs, if i should be looking at 90/100s, what temperature about are the Hella H4s that come with the kit?

Can anyone recommend a good bulb at about that power that has a whiter color? Not obnoxious purple crap. I put some regular Silverstars in my Mom's WJ low beams (they where on clearance sale and hers where blown) and they look more like natural light and less of an old flashlight.

As far as OEM fogs, can anyone estimate just how much they light up on their own in the stock location? I'm really getting the feeling there's no point to getting them when they cost the same as a pair or Hella 550s.
