I just did this to my 2001 XJ about a week ago. So far I have noticed more responsive steering and it doesn't seem to struggle to turn my 32 BFG KM2s. Absolutely worth it IMHO. Hope that helps.

I believe I read on another post on CF that the 98-99 are the same and the years you want to do this mod. I used a 99 and it fit just fine with a two washer spacer.

sorry i didnt get a chance to reply earlier . well u all have convinced me to do it! . i have a 99 in the shop, just pulled it out of a rolled durango . im sure the swap should be pretty easy i have a aftermarket steering box backing plate aswell, will it still work with that mod?

dont you have to have to remove a spacer and grind the cap of the durango box for it to turn as far side to side as the stock xj box ?? didnt u do the write up frankz?
