Durango 160 amp alternator help
I read on some forums that a 2002 durango alternator will work on xjs if you grind down the brackets but i can’t believe that it will work because it isn’t even remotely close to fitting before grinding. anyone know???

I might be going down this road myself. It is not mentioned much but I have read a post where the guy said a little grinding of the block was necessary too. I have been PM'ing with a guy who was pretty sure he used the 2002 Durango 160 amp and did not have to grind down the block though.
Do you have that upside down in the picture? I think the 2002 Durango 160 amp alternator is specific for '01 to '03. And just for the Durango. Any chance you might have a different one? Where did you get it? Looks new. Would not be the first time a part was boxed wrong. |
I recommend the external regulator mod vs. a different alternator. Jeep pcm's on the xj and zj seem to be bad out of the box, just bad design. I put in an external reg from an 88 powerwagon. No more dead batts and voltage drop at idle. for sure. And yes, under $20 and they do have temperature compensation built in. Anyone interested may pm me. Heck might even post a thread.

Found a pic from an old post that may help you see what you have to do. Also remember to swap pulleys and 99+ has the same connector as a 2002 Durango. |
okay guys i figured out my problem! the one i bought is for the 5.9 v8 and the correct one is for the 4.7. other forums should be more clear on which one is the correct one.

You sure cause the 4.7 has that stud coming off the top. Assuming the picture is to be believed. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/RSE2...earchIndex=App Also has a 6 groove pulley apparently. Does that mean you don't swap it? |

i think that napa one is the 5.9 because the one i bought has that same stud. the top side of the alternator that has the double shear mounting isn’t even close to fitting i would have to load some washers or a spacer in there. I ordered a 4.7 off rock auto (part TYC 213915) that should come in on friday. I’ll keep you guys updated.
https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/RSE2...earchIndex=App And it has the 7 groove pulley that everybody says you need to swap. |

Would not be the first time that pictures were wrong on the Napa site but this is the 5.9 one.
