Driveshaft lengths
so I found a custom front driveshaft for sale pulled from a ZJ, the shaft is made by Carolina Driveline, the measurements are from center to center on the ujoints, when closed 31.5" when open 35" the shaft is pulled so I cannot get a measurement at resting position. Also my jeep is in my buddys garage so I cannot get a measurement of it in the jeep. thus my question to all of you is whether or not this shaft could fit in my XJ. im currently at give or take 5.5-6" lift considering all extra weight on the jeep between bumpers and armor. ill get the length of my shaft mounted in my XJ as soon as one of us can get to his garage to measure it. any other info needed please let me know, thanks!

You have an SYE on there right now or are you planning on one? What kind of SYE? Which transmission? Which rear axle?
What you're supposed to do is measure from the SYE output yoke to the axle pinion yoke. That gives you your running length, typically budget +/- 1.5" for open/collapsed

to measure from the sye output yoke to axle pinion yoke I would have to remove my driveshaft correct?

Oh you want to replace your FRONT DS? Stock XJ DS is like 28.6". Are you running out of splines in the slip yoke?
Yes to measure "properly" you'll need to remove the DS, but you can get a close enough approximation within a fraction of an inch without removing it. I'd say running length for that ZJ DS is about 33"

see when I got the lengths of the DS and told the seller I thought the DS was too long, he told me he had multiple XJ owners offer him trades for it but I was only one with cash so I got first dips. I told him I needed to research more and id get back to him. I personally believe the DS will be far too long to run in my XJ

Sorry, 28.6" collapsed, not running length.
Yeah that DS is very desirable for use with an SYE for us folks with manual transmissions I have a shaft from a ZJ in my shed waiting to go in.

32"is running length on the xj DS I think I just measured mine from ujoint to ujoint, if that's the case and the DS I was to buy is 31.5 collapsed and 35" extended should this DS should fit my jeep?

32" is the running length on your Jeep? Definitely don't get the ZJ shaft then. From the factory there's 1.5" travel in the shaft which is enough for the stock suspension to be completely compressed without it bottoming out. Lifted you're almost certainly going to have problems unless you have an LCOG build with nearly no uptravel to the bump stops.
