Default Drive shaft question

Ok so jeep I question is a88 2 door Laredo. 4.0 had the ba and the np231 I just did the ax 15 swappy poo and a new 231 with a aa sye. I had to cut out the old t case drop that was welded in for the location of the ba that was a pain. But alas it's all done oiled up and all. Go to fit my front shaft in the rear and it's too short by 2 inches at full extension. I had this's issue when I did my 8.25 swap with the shaft being too long by 3 inches. No big deal measured yoke to yoke at ride height. Went to the scrap yard found one that measured close to what I need while installed from a 98 4.0 auto with 231 got home installed it I forgot to grab the rear hold downs and I only have one with me the others are at my shop. But I noticed that I am fully extended at ride height and wanted to know if it is safe to drive like this. I currently don't have 4wd that works as I need to match the front gears to the rear and get rid of the vac axle. And I won't be wheeling much in 2wd Name: null_zps7d930140.jpg

I'm sure getting it lengthened would be simple enough but you may be able to find a used one off a grand cherokee that is a bit longer? And it may cost less in the long run

This shaft I have is about 33" from end to end and it's like that installed. It's the longest stock shaft I could find. I guess I can find a truck that runs a Cardin joint with the same u joints that's longer maybe. Or just have these lengthened.

Nope I wouldn't run that at all. There is very little spline engagement under that seal. Go get a front DS from a ZJ like freegdr suggested, you need one that has a 33" running length. There's supposed to be 1.5" travel before the splines even show.

Look at the tatton drive shafts on ebay. I run them and Im very happy with them. For about 260 bucks you get all new. I bought a couple from the yard first but after a month or so they all needed to be rebuilt. I would say save the head ache and buy all new and forget about it.

The 4X4 dodge dakota around a 99 or 98, has a front shaft that is half way between the length of an XJ frt shaft, and a ZJ frt shaft. I'm running one.

My 2000 xj with an auto transmission and A 231transfer. Both Measure 33"center to center on the joints at ride height with a 4-1/2" lift. I used a stock front in my rear for quite awhile with no problems.

Collapsed or extended length ? Whats the measurement from center to center on yours sitting at ride height ?
