Drive shaft out of phase?

New to this type of joint and shaft but shouldn't the joints be in line?

yes they should

The shaft has a slip joint about 6" in from the end with a single u joint. Should be able to yank that end of the shaft out, rotate it, and reinsert it.

Yep, that one's out of phase.

Someone at some point in time pulled the axle end yoke off.

It shouldn't take anymore than 2 minutes to get it phased correctly again.

Ok, 2minutes are up. Thing was not stuck, but not sliding the easiest. Got some slickem juice in her and she freed up a little, but still dont wanta come apart. Im working on it. Just did a little research on driveshafts and learnt that if you change it and it was balanced that way then it will be out of balance. Just thinkink since it is so hard to get apart, that is the way it was balanced from the factory. Any thoughts on that or am I just over thinking it? FYI, this was got at the junk yard and it came out of a 93 ZJ.

You got a local driveshaft shop or big diesel shop ?Both can fix it for you and even fully rebuild the joint in it if you want that.

It was NOT balanced that way at the factory !!

That driveshaft will give you all kinds of vibes cuz it is not assembled correctly, even if it is perfectly balanced.

It's likely the reason it is so hard to get apart, is the accelerated wear from being used that way has developed wear ridges in the splines, and you are having a hard time getting them apart.

So my question to you is it goina be alright after I re-phase it and new joints?

Maybe, maybe not.

Might be worth finding a used one, and changing things out on it.

If you're going to be changing joints, make sure you do the centering ball stuff as well.

As was said...maybe, maybe not.....best bet is get another driveshaft from the JY that isn't out pf phase.....(or new...either way).

Kinda like a shock...you want the bolt holding it to the jeep to be oriented the same way...if they are 90 deg off from each other, then the shock has limited mobility
