Doetsch tech shocks
Here is what happened with my doetsch tech shock after 2 times out on them. I sent it back for "inspection" so they could determine if it was a manufacturer defect. Anyways I am already out shipping and they will make me pay the shipping on the new shock, if it is deemed defective !!! I should not be liable for any shipping charges. Will see what happens.

I have had them on my TJ for a few years now and beat the hell out of my Jeep. They've never failed me and ride very nice.
I'd have to say you did get a defective item, and I would insist they cover shipping to get the replacement shock to you. It is not unreasonable for you to pay shipping to get the defective item back to them, but the replacement item should be paid for by the company.
If they do not stand behind their product and get you a new shock, be sure to let us know. I would not buy again and will stop recommending them to others if they don't give decent customer service and replace it for you.

I actually do like the ride of them very much. It is hard and the Jeep feels planted very well, but I have never seen that happened to another shock. I am very dissopointed. I hope they replace it. Nevertheless, defective is defective so people need to know.

I had that happen to one on my XJ a few years back, It was caused by a bad weld on the shaft, I replaced them with Bilstein 5100's which is the only shock I will run now

dont have a welder, dont have room in the garage, dont know how to weld. I guess you could pretty much weld stuff together after it brakes, but shouldnt have to in the first place.

I've ran them for 6+ years and love them. From your pic it looks like the shocks are too long and bottomed out when you compressed the rear.

The shocks are not too long. My wheel would hit the wheel well before the shock bottoms out. It just looks like they would bottom out because of the rubber bumpstop. (which according to their techs should compress all the way to about 1/4 in). I have the rear set up perfectly. The shocks dont bottom out under compression and also dont limit the travel. They are just right. I might be a newbie on this forum but am not a newbie to suspension. Even if overcompression was an issue the company markets the shocks for their built in bumpstops, so it wouldnt matter. I understand you ran them for six years but I was not that fortunate. I wish I could say the same as I really like them. Hopefully they send me a replacement that holds up.

I have a set of them in the front. I should have gotten a shorter length but I wanted the down travel. Those bump stops do not compress. I had stuffed my front wheel flexing out and that bump stop did nothing. I am thinking of cutting the bump stop out to gain that extra inch of up travel.
They should replace it but for 45 bucks for a replacement its not the end of the world.

I too have run Dt's for years.. love them.
As for your axle wrap.. look into building an anti wrap bar. Also the shock placement on th axle isnt idle... you always could relocate shocks so this doeant happen again.

Now that the axle wrap is probably the reason I understand what needs to be done. The thing is after this happened I did not see any marks on the shock shaft that would indicate that it came in contact with the axle tube. I guess it is possible that it snaped without touching it, just from twisting. Oh well, hopefully I get a new shock from them. I dont want to relocate the mounts for now, as if I located them even with the axle they will be way to long and have 0 uptravel. It has to stay like this for a while. Next time around I will get shorter shocks and relocate the mounts even with the axle.
