differentials and roof questions
Hello everyone, I bought a 1991 Cherokee a few weeks ago and have a few things I'm looking to do with it. First I would like to put a rack on the top of the Jeep, but would it be better to gutter mounts, or to fit mounts into existing roof rails. Which option would hold more weight? or does it really matter?
Also, my 4x4 locks the front and rear driveshafts, and I believe that my front and rear differential are open. So I was wondering if I can put a limited-slip differential or lockers in the front axle. Or what would be the best option? Thanks in advance for your help!

Your 1991 might have a limited slip differential from the factory, however 21 years later, there probably isn't going to be much limiting of the slip. Yes there are a variety of lockers you can buy for your front and rear axles. Brands that come to mind are Spartan, Aussie, Powertrax, ARB etc. There are also a variety of price ranges involving locking your diffs.

Thanks for the replies. The reason I was looking to put a limited slip differential on is because when I was off-roading, my front right and my rear back tires came off the ground and were just spinning. I don't do major off-roading, just moderate trails, but having at least the front to be limited slip would be nice, especially when it snows. If I did put a limited slip or locker on from one of these companies. would it mess anything up if I had a limited slip in the front while driving in just two wheel drive?

The gutter mounts hold more weight.
And for the locker in the back theres a few reasons;
1. When you go up an incline your weight is on the back tires, not much on the front so the rear locker is more beneficial.
2. front locker or LSD in the snow is a bad idea. it causes you to loose traction when you're trying to turn which thus forces you straight forward into a school bus full of nuns and the sort.
So conclusion is just buy a lunchbox for the rear and gutter mounts.

Thank you all for the replies, you've given me quite a bit to think about. Lockers are very expensive so I might not be getting something like that till later in the summer at the soonest. As for the roof rack, I'm looking through craigslist and ebay for some gutter mounts.
