diff. lockers

can someone please explain to me what a dff locker is and why i would need it.. my offroad shop recomended it wen i bought my lift?

simply put... what u have now is an open diff. it will send power to the tire with least resistance. so when u put a locker in it "locks" up both axles so both tires have power and u have traction....

Q. What are they for ?
A. Traction. And lots of it.

Q. Are you planning on doing any off roading?
A. Yes.
Solution: Get two. One in front and one in rear.

Q. Do you just have a lift for looks?
A. Yes.
Then you probably won't need them.

yea i offroad quite a bit just wasnt sure if it was worth spending the money getting my xj locked or not..guess i will go that route what lockers would you guys recommend?

I'm always an advocate of answering the question and not simply saying search.

However this is getting completely out of hand at this point.

www.google.com Will answer your question.

lockers are ment for high end offroading like 7-10 trails need lockers. if you gonna be doing "some" offroading you most likely wont need them.. if you are goin to be on alot of off camber situations where one or more tires is off the ground you would want a locker. if not just wheel smart. pick good lines and if u need to stack rocks. lockers are pretty expensive but if u wanna drop the money on one thats up to you.

I like that you're taking the initiative and doing it yourself and that you take time to ask questions. I know the search feature on this site sucks sometimes but you can always use google for questions like this or "What size tire can i run with such and such lift" or other common questions. If you didnt find the answer no big deal, then ask.

Welcome to Jeeps, don't mind those of us who are crabby. lol

That video, in general, explains the 3 basic differential types: open, limited slip and locking. It gets murky after that.
