Default Diesel swap info

Im looking to upgrade engines and Im wanting to go diesel.
I saw a swap with a 300sd turbo 5cyl. Is there a better one? Or maybe something easier or more common.

Cummins 4bt was what I was thinking of putting in one as a tow rig.

With the 4bt can you keep the oem trans and transfer case?
With the 300sd the guy reported having the oem trans and transfer case.
Id like to do as little fabbing as i can.

4bt's were mated to turbo 400 so i do not believe you can keep the oem trans. i think a 4bt would take a lot of fabbing as well. They are extremely heavy and incredibly powerful. So many things would need upgraded to handle that kind of power.

The video i saw on Google showed it as the oem trans a t-case. But then again it does not go into detail on how he did it. Im starting to save for the project and just wanting a goal and the type of engine. As it stands i only know the i want a diesel.

The reason your not getting many responses, is because this stupid question is asked by someone who has not searched the forum every week...

And my advice is look up Novak adapters.

Useful site but nothing on diesel yet. As for stupid question. Its all in a matter of opinion.
You might not like the idea of having a diesel but i do.
Its not going to be a easy swap i know but asking for info will only make it easier.

He didn't say the diesel idea was stupid, just the question itself. Your not going to get a response that tells you enough information to really help. You need to search, search, and search everywhere. Read builds, research the mounts, how the electronics are, engine specs and so on.

Well that's what most of us assume, you watched a you tube video of a diesel cherokee an now you wanna do it. We deal with this weekly no disrespect.

Like I stated earlier contact Novak about motor mounts, and Trans adapters once you decide on a engine and Trans combo. The swap should not be to bad, diesel are very simple if you get something like the 4bt. And about the weight on the front end and its going to year your Jeep in half blah blah, its all bs. a winch bumper and some acc. Will add the same amount of weight. GL

Yeah, weight isn't a huge concern, but fortifying the unibody to handle the torque will be.

Using the OM617 (mercedes 300SD or DD) motor it is similar weight to a Jeep engine and similar hp/tq numbers too.

Bolts up to manual tranny and I think it will also bolt to auto tranny if you use the manual tranny outer housing/

So some would ask why do it if its not much gain over a standard jeep motor?

Because its diesel is my answer, thats enough reason for me. Added mpg is a bonus too. If you run grease like I plan to out of a 2nd gas tank, fuel becomes crazy cheap. If you don't like the idea then fine, don't do it, go read another post.

This and a teralow 4:0:1 xfer case would be t!ts!

I am researching and attempting this merc swap sometime next year.
