Default Diesel Swap with an automatic transmission?

Aight so im REALLY tired of gettin 15 mpg in my heep. Ive seen people do diesel swaps, and im really interested but I want to keep my automatic transmission. Is there any diesel engine out there that will bolt up to it?
Or is there any way I can get a 4bt or 1.9 liter vw engine mated to an automatic transmission that will work in the cherokee?
Thanks

It won't work with a stock transmission. Diesels run at a lot lower rpm than gassers. Most people use a 4bt cummins with a 700r4 from a 6.2 powered diesel Chevy/gmc

Well what auto transmission will work with a 1.9l vw tdi?
Will the original vw transmission work with the cherokee?

change out the gearing in your rear end. go woth a higher gear ratio to lower your rpm's also larger tires will lower the rpm's

Until your at highway speeds. But if i remember reading right even at higher RPM's at highway speeds it doesnt really affect the MPG that much? Idk might be wrong.

No it doesnt affect it alot. I did a vw swap recently gearing was a big issue I kept the auto but at 70 I was pushing 3500 rpm. Ideally I wanted to get it down around 2500 wasnt able to get them that low but was able to get it to 2900 with tires.

So you kept the aw4? Which VW engine did you use? What kind of mpg's are you getting? And what size tires and gearing?

No my swap was vw diesel into vw van. But I was running 30's on it due to the fact there were no options for regearing. But my point is that van weighed in ay just over 5k #. So the vw diesel would be a great option for some thing a small a the xj. And with all the greasing options you could easily keep your aw4.

I got 26-28 mpg consistently. much bigger rig. Much more weight. Not ideal gearing. 1.9 td aaz. Mechanical injection.

So I would just have to make an adapter (Or buy one) to hook the 1.9l tdi to the aw4, and then regear?

Well I would nut go tdi way to much wiring. Get the aaz.engine it only needed Two or three wires to run but you will need some thing to mount the motor to as.well

how about adapting a newer model from a jeep if you can find one in the wrecking yards.

I know I saw a diesel Jeep, I think it was a Liberty for sale relatively local. & when I saw your post, I thought about, but I dont have any idea what might be involved in that swap.
