I would defiantly say stay away from the liberty engines. They have variable turbos which are controlled by computer modules. If you take the engine from a junk yard find, take EVERYTHING, wiring, modules, etc.... As far a diesels in xj's I'd try looking around pirate. I've seen a few builds there.

look into a 3.0L mercedes.....they came in the 300sd cars or something like that, they are light and you can buy the whole running car for less than just the 4bt cummins motor
check advance adapters for mating it to your tranny
and look on pirate 4x4.com for swaps, ik there are a few that were done over there

the 2.1 renault turbo and nat. asp. motors are NOT bad motors, if you know how to maintain them.
they are very finicky to maintain, but my dad has put 263,000 miles on his, he picked it up with 80k miles and a bad timing belt (they are an interference motor, had to put rockers, valves, push rods in it) and while it has a ton of issues (cracked head, etc.) it gets a steady 30mpg, up to 36/37 mpg when not cracked and you can actually get the boost above 5 psi.
that truck is too rusty to fix, but one of the best, most reliable trucks he's ever had. granted, it required being more than **** on maintenance, but it's never had to be towed anywhere.
I have a 2.5VM sitting in my garage. front half of the cherokee, saved for a rainy day. should make an interesting project when I'm done. it was an OE united states titled vehicle. remember, they were produced here, shipped over seas for the most part, but still mildly available.
and yes, good luck finding parts at a reasonable price for either. or trying to upgrade as brutalxj suggested....you literally can not put an ax15 behind a 2.1 diesel, not sure on the 2.5vm. no bell housings offered for them.
