Default Diag issue <Baffled>

Okay guys, I have a fairly extensive auto background and cannot figure out exactly the cause for this issue im having.

-Cant remember what conditions i was in when symptoms appeared.

I have a 98 XJ with 185k. Started about a month or two ago. Mind you i live in Wyoming and just got through 0 degree weather.

It sounds like a chirping sound. (sand being thrown against radiator fins) a plink plink plink constant but not repititious - when:

Operating at cold and operating temperatures
Above 15 MPH with the vehicle running or off.
Occurs in gear and out of gear.
Occurs with brakes on and off
Occurs with 4wd engaged and disengaged.

- Previously before the issue arose it took a fairly long time for the vehicle to reach operating temp.

- Now the issue has risen i hear the plinking sound from the front end - before i replaced the radiator cap and attempted burping the system --- at idle the jeep would reach 220 degrees and engage the fan.

- Replaced the radiator cap in hopes it was an intermitant issue and the cap would fix things... However after replacing the cap and pressure testing the radiator i cannot reach operating temp. Ambient temp outside is 45 degrees or so. (Coolant quality is acceptable but needs replacement) Not sure how old the thermostat is.

...............Any ideas guys????

PS: almost forgot. Once the vehicle has been running at the max temp it can reach at idle or during driving which was 215 -220 before the cap and about 180 with a new cap the plinking sound would subside and is barely noticable but still present.....

Yes the noise occurs while in motion with the engine running and with it off all while in motion. ---- However, as for the belt. I have not changed it. It is in good condition. It is spec tight.

Thats kinda what i began to think however. I took off the tires checked the joints - sheilds - rotor to sheild contact - pads, etc. No issues atleast while rotating it by hand. I suppose this post is premature in the sense i probably should put it up on a lift and set cruise at 30 and listen. If it wont do it at that point i am clueless....

could even be the unit bearing, and it may only do it with the weight of the jeep on it

Good thinkin. Its a tricky one. However, I replaced the whole front left end. wheel bearings / u-joints / etc about 4 or 5 months ago. Now if i remember correctly. The issue arose shortly after i did some intensive mudding with some buddies. I had submerged everything up to the bottom door sills.

in that case, pull the front diff cover and check for any signs of rust or water. go ahead and do this for the t-case, rear axle and transmission.

also grease up EVERYTHING heavily. and carefully inspect the unit bearings for any noise or abnormal feeling.

water/mud does bad things

I appreciate the help. My dif's and my tcase are sealed that i know for a fact. However im guessing the only componant that could potentially get damaged would be the bearings at the wheel ends..... Ill check that out sometime soon. Hopefully i get somewhere with it.

- I appreciate the help guys.

- Chris.

One last question.

What component are you referring to as the Unit Bearing?... Wheel Bearing?

Good thought tho.
