dana 60 question

Default dana 60 question

I recently bought a ford Dana 60 that I'm building for the front of my xj. It supposedly has new bearings, seals, 5.13 gears and a spool installed. Im wondering what this shim is doing on the outside of the bearing. I thought d60 shims went between the bearing and carrier/spool. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've set them up both ways but it needs to actually be between the housing and race not just half of it.

Looks like someone got lazy and didn't want to pull off the bearing again

Stock the kingpin style D60 was a shim set between the bearing and carrier. The newer "super" 60 and other aftermarket ones, are set for between the race and housing. OR if you have a air locker for instance, then the shims are made to go outside also.

There is no exact 'correct' way on your application, as to where. But there is a 'incorrect' way to install them, and your looking at it. It is very difficult to get less than about a .030 by itself, into the area your shim is. Even with the correct drivers.

Thanks for the replys. I pulled out the spool and it came out way to easy. This is the mangled
shim that was wedged in there. Gonna order a new master install kit and set it up right.
