Default dana 44 question??

a guy near me is selling a dana 44. i asked if its originally from a XJ..

his answer was "Yes an original xj narrow track 44".

will that fit my 2000 xj? whats a narrow track?

sys it has 3.55 gear and a lock right in it. whats a fair price for one of these?

thanks in advance.

I believe he is reffering to the difference between the XJ 60'' width 44 and a wagoneer full width 65''. if it came form an XJ you should be good to bolt right up. Price wise if it was from a Junk Yard, any axle would be about $200. So I would offer $400 to be fair.

He is asking $400. I know they aren't the easiest to find but wasn't sure what were worth.

Thanks man.

Be sure to verify the gearing, I came across a factory XJ 44 with like 307s in it..

Ive bought 2 factory Xj 44s...one was mint with new everything and I paid $300 plus a 2 hours drive..other I paid 200 for and it was in fair shape.

I figured the lock rite has to be worth something. No?

What is the drum to drum measurement and spring perch center to center measurements. Anyone know off hand so I can check it?

Ive yet to come across a factory xj 44, whether junk yards, craigslist, on the road and yes I do look.

The last complete good d44 rear end I saw was not for a Jeep and went for $400...

Im holding out for a ford with disk brakes, big swap like that why not go all the way.

if it has 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern and spring perches on top, it's from an xj.
mj also had the 44 but was spring under and is also 5 on 4.5.

i have 2 xj44s. one in a jeep with locker and other is on shop floor.
bought them both for 100 a piece and rebuilt the one so far.

i see them from time to time, usually selling for 2-300.

I bought mine for $125 and it was sitting outside for more than 10 years. I had to destroy the drums just to open up inside.

Damn where are you guys finding these couple hundred $ xj's.... I mean I paid $240 for mine and drove it away with 235k mi, but it was pretty trashed. Still driving that engine and trans 35k miles later, but most other things have been touched.

As far as strength you would not be gaining a lot with the D44 over the Chy 8.25 just more parts available for it is all.

You will want to verify it is indeed an XJ 44. Narrow track generally refers to the D44's that were in CJ's (the other was considered wide track and was an AMC 20). The pumpkin on these is generally offset even for the rear, to mate up to the d18 tcase.

I paid $350 for mine about a year ago, came with a master rebuild kit since the guy was gonna re-gear it but instead was moving to Cali and didn't want to drag it along.
