Hi ya,
I'm planning on doing a 4.5-5.5" lift soon with 33"x12.5" tires and would like to swap my D35 to a D44 with 4.56 gear ratio.
This may sounds silly (since i'm gonna upgrade to a 4.56 ratio ) but while searching for Dana 44 on Car-part.com, i was given a few gear ratio option.
Pls comment on which Spicer 44 (i'm assuming they are Dana 44 ) should i be looking for.
1)Spicer 44 w/3.07 ratio
2)Spicer 44 w/3.54 ratio or
3)Spicer 44 w/3.55 ratio.
Appreciate if someone can help a newbie out.
Thx ya.

Assuming your D30 (front) is 3.55: get the 44 in 3.55

there are other options. the carrier brake is <3.73, and 3.92> so a regular 4.56 wont work. but you could get a thick gear, which allows you to use your carrier and spider gears. the difference in carrier is made up in the ring gear by making it thicker for a different offset.
info on a XJ D44- http://www.ringpinion.com/DiffDetail...=Diff&TypeID=3
Thick ring gear- http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDet...px?ProdID=3311
I am not saying its better or cheaper depending on brand of gears you choose. but its an option.

Thx all for the comments.
Did some reading and it seem it takes more than a little reading to complete this job......therefore i'm gonna kiv this until i've done enough research.
Not to say that this goes wasted, as i did learnt from this thread that the front and rear HAVE to have the same gear ratio. .
Appreciate everyone for all the help.

Here is my current stock set up,
DJKS Dana 30/181MM Front Axle
DMDS 3.55 Rear Axle Ratio
DRMP Dana 35C/194MM Rear Axle
It didn't say anything about my gear ratio for my front Dana30, but i'm gonna assume is 3.55 since my rear axle ratio is 3.55, right?
If that being so, i should be looking for a Dana 44 with 3.55 gear ratio and i would work even without re-gearing both axle, right?
If I'm right so far, my plan would be to find a Dana 44 w/ 3.55 gear ratio, bolt it on and run 33x12.5" with 3.55 gear ratio until i figured out how to do the 4.56 gear upgrade.
Pls correct me if i'm wrong.
Finally, i found a Dana 44 with 3.55 gear ratio (claimed by seller) off an 89 XJ but i'm not sure how to confirm the gear ratio. Is there a way i can tell by looking at the axle?
One last question before i bored everyone,
Should i be particular with the axle spline count?
I would really appreciate all the help i can get.

now we got that out of the way, onto your questions. your dana 30 is geared to 3.55 if it came like that from the factory, i doubt someone swapped another front end in w/ a different gear ratio. so, its safe to say you have dana 30/dana 35 w/ 3.55 gears.
and yes, if you find a dana 44 with 3.55 gears you can bolt it in, in place of your dana 35 with no issues. it will be just fine, AS LONG AS ITS THE SAME GEAR RATIO
and lastly, there are a few different ways to check gear ratio.
1. look for a tag on the diff cover that says the gear ratio
2. count the teeth on the ring gear (larger gear) then divide that number by how many teeth on the pinion (smaller gear)
3. turn the wheel and count how many times the driveshaft turns. driveshaft turns approx. 3 1/2 times - 3.55 gears

oh, and the spline count on the dana 44 is 30

all this non-sense isn't really necessary. you can just say you have a dana 30 front axle and a dana 35 c-clip rear axle
