Which Dana 44 gear ratio?
Hi ya,
I'm planning on doing a 4.5-5.5" lift soon with 33"x12.5" tires and would like to swap my D35 to a D44 with 4.56 gear ratio. This may sounds silly (since i'm gonna upgrade to a 4.56 ratio ) but while searching for Dana 44 on Car-part.com, i was given a few gear ratio option. Pls comment on which Spicer 44 (i'm assuming they are Dana 44 :confused1:) should i be looking for. 1)Spicer 44 w/3.07 ratio 2)Spicer 44 w/3.54 ratio or 3)Spicer 44 w/3.55 ratio. Appreciate if someone can help a newbie out. Thx ya. |
since you are regearing, any XJ 44 will work. spicer=dana.

those are just different gear ratios that came in dana 44 rears from the factor what you need to find out is what gear is in the 44 you have and if the carrier will accept the 456 gear up grade you may have to get new carriers along with ring and pinion and install kits
|
it seem both dana 30 and 44 need at least 373 gears in them to have the carrier that accepts the 456 ratio your looking at around 400 to 700 dollars a axler for carriers with spiders, ring and pinion ,and master install kit plus labor, prive depends on where you buy and the quality of the parts
|
Thx for all the comments.
Another newbie question, need at least 373 gears so none of the above would work since they are between 3.07 and 3.55? |

hope i don't loose your patience but i'm really not following you :confused1:. I'm running stock D30 and D35 with auto 231 transmission. Just read you link....THX! Based on my understanding, i'm fine with any of the above Dana 44 but i would have to upgrade the carrier if i wanna change my gear ratio to 4.56, right? But the link you posted was about carrier for Dana 35 running on 4.56 tho.:confused1: |

so i can't run 4.56 gear ratio on ANY Dana 44? This is what i have, DJKS Dana 30/181MM Front Axle DMDS 3.55 Rear Axle Ratio DRMP Dana 35C/194MM Rear Axle .....but what has it got to do with since i'm swapping to a Dana 44 :confused1::confused1: |
You can run a 4.56 ratio in any Dana 44 all you need is to replace the carrier when you change the gears, or install a full carrier locker when you do the gears.

Thx ya for taking time to help a NEWBIE out .
I must admit i'm not very smart with the Jeep/diy things, so long as a Dana 44 from a 1987-89 cherokee will works, be it 3.07, 3.54 or 3.55 gear ratio, right? I'm not understanding much about gears and carrier stuff or even the cost for now (but will be doing more reading ), just wanna start getting a D44 to start the project going , but i do know i need to replace my D35 for the better. Again, like i mentioned above, any Dana 44 from a 1987-89 cherokee would work? If so, let the hunt begins :icon_cheesygrin:. |
yup, any XJ 44 will work. you will need a new carrier, ring and pinion, and install kit for the 4.56s. as well as a professional who has done gear installs before as its not exactly easy to do.
