dana 44 axle swap
hey guys, scored an xj dana 44 for my rig. i have a few questions reguarding it.
-it has old gear oil in it just to keep it lubricated. i want to clean it out, is there a solution best for this or just tip and dump and rinse, and if rinse, what would i rinse with? (maybe im over thinking that part)
-and ive searched and i know this is a pretty simple and clear cut thing, but is there a write up with a xj dana 44 swap that any of you know of? ive looked and the only thing i can find really is the ford 8.8 (which is understandable since it is more difficult) but id still like to have a guide i guess.
-finally, the axle is geared stock at 3.55, and i wanna run 31's. i was looking into it and saw that most people have no issue with it, but would it be worth the investment going up to 4.10? and would 4.10 handle 33's if i were to someday upgrade?
thanks guys!

Ok the easiest way to clean an axle out is to diassemble it.
Then getting some simple green or purple power and pressure wash it.. Then take compressed air and blow it dry.. then promptly spray it with WD40. Personally if I was going to regear I would do 4.56's just to make it worth the money of gears and install kit.

1) dump the old gear oil, use carb/intake cleaner and rince it out (spray it out) and inspect. carb cleaner wont hurt seals like brake cleaner will
2) if it is set up for the xj it will take about 2 hours to swap out the rear ends given you dont have any issues. very simple
3) you need to make sure that you are matched front and rear for gears or you cannot use 4wd. I personally run stock 3.07's with 33's. but 3.55 or 4.10 will be fine with a manual, 4.10 or 4.56 will be prime with an auto
