Default Dana 30 truss welding

Okay. I am getting ready to truss my 30. I am just looking for some tips. I know that the housing can warp fairly easily. My buddy is welding it up. I know to should I pre heat to weld the tubes, the center, or both? Any other tips. I think he is planning to tig it.

Pre heat the center section and let it cool very slow. No need to heat the tubes unless your welder doesn't have enough ***** to penetrate on it's own.

To be able to penetrate due to the thickness of the center section

I'm a newbie, so you may already know, but I'm having mine welded next week, I was told not to weld the whole truss, but to "stitch" the truss, the heat alone may cause your d30 to wrap, still on the fence about using a single plate vs. Double plate truss just for the sole fact of the least amount of heat applied to the d30. Best of luck

I would seam weld it but in small sections, allowing time for cooling after each.

This is the game plan, we are tacking the truss very well, so that it helps prevent warping. Then we are going to weld to the center section first. So that it is solid on that side when we move to the tubes. The plan is to stitch weld. 1" sections at a time with roughly 30 mins between. It is a ballistic fab truss. It is 1/8 so it shouldn't require quite as much heat as 3/16. Does that seem like a decent plan to you guys?

Looks really good!

I know this is reviving an old thread, but did you install any other parts on your D30?

My inner C's are bowed in a bit, and I'm trying to figure out if I would be best to install C gussets and a truss like that to strengthen the whole piece...

If your inner cs are already bent in then don't waste your time gusseting. Time for a new housing before doing so.

Well that's part of it...but also the diff housing is cast steel, and can crack without preheating before welding, as well as post heating after welding. Post heat using a torch, and just use less and less, until you let it cool naturally.
