Can't you just put that special marking stuff on the teeth and rotate it and adjust accordingly based on where they make contact?

that's usually how you do it. test and test again with the marking paint till you get the right contact patch.

I ran into the same problem when I did mine last month but luckily I had barrowed a buddies pinion depth gauge setup so both frt & rear pinion depths didn't need any adjustment from where I set them up at the first try. See if you can find someone with one of those gauge sets.

You still have to use marking compound to check for final set up but if you have the pinion tool you get there quicker. Btw it is just for setting pinion depth.

I know you always check with gear marking compound but read step 7 of this article. I have read several articles where pinion depth could be determined the first time and then it's just a matter of getting carrier shims adjusted for backlash.

I always put the stock shims on(from original ring and pinion) and run a pattern. Then go from there. A press and bearing splitter will be needed to pull the pinion bearing to change shims, a little trick though is to home out the old pinion bearing so it slides on and off the pinion for ease of changing shims. Good luck
