personally i would take the semi-float 44 over the c-clip 8.8.
or even go with a ford 9" and be done with it.

personally i think you should run a 609 (jk). but really both axles are good axles, the ford 8.8 is a lot more common and tends to be cheaper then an XJ44.

the 8.8 has the edge in strength over the 44.

and the disc brakes and the huge aftermarket are a big plus.

it really matters if you're comfortable doing the grinding and welding it takes to install the 8.8. but, if not...and you can find a cheap XJ44, then i say go with the 44

but, overall i would choose the 8.8

Just installed the Ford 8.8. It is bigger than the D44 and the disc brakes are a nice upgrade.

I'm doing a 9in... just sold my third d44 I've found... but I would install a 8.8 before a d44... 3.73's with limited slip and find a 3.73 Dana 30... I've got one locally in my jy... or find a 4.10 8.8 which I have 4 locally non with ls... and regear your front or find a TJ with 4.10's which I have one of those locally as well lol... look at ruff stuffs simple axle swap... that's what I got... for the money its beef as heck man... and has everything to make it easy to swap in... the 8.8's brake lines and everything are the same... so its more work to give a Dana 44 disc brakes and better gears then welding on perches and shock tabs to the 8.8... nottto mention u can rotate the 8.8's yoke up and get your driveline back from your lift...

Is there any way of knowing which 8.8 vehicles came with 4:10s? Just like most xj 4 bangers came with 4:10s.

Not many xjs had 4.10's... most were 3.73... I've never seen a 4.10 xj... 8.8's have a tag on the pass side diff that sticks out... says 4.10... 3.73... 3L73... means limited slip... 3.55... 3.27 I think that's all of them...

What about the ford 9" that was in the older small broncos? Do anyone know if they are close enough to the stock jeep axles?

I never thought they had a nine inch... not a big enough vehicle... some cars had a narrower 9in but were 28 spline and small bearings...
