cut and fold rear panels - thoughts?
i need a new rear bumper and have been looking at some that require you to cut and fold the rear quarter panel. im just woundering is it worth it? i dont mind cutting on my jeep but i dont like the way it looks after i saw some with this mod and i also dont see it helping that much because your rear shakel is still hanging down. my jeep is a daily driver (for now) and mild offroader. i do plan on making it more extreme in the future but i just cant see it doing that much good. also a couple of the companys state that you cant tow with there cut and fold bumpers but i still want to be able to tow with my jeep until i put a more extreme lift on it. the bumper i was going to get is the C-rock. i like how it bolts all the way around, but the cut and fold Offroad fab bumper looks good also. any thoughts?

i did my rear cut and fold. because, the first time i took it out wheeling i dented the driverside panel on a tree. now that it's folded. it stiffed the lower lip of my rear quarter panel. which helps me bump the tree (without denting my rear quarter) when turning on one spot of the trail. plus i plan on making my rear rap around bumper.
the other reason i did it was. when out wheeling on muddy trails. the mud does not build up in my rear fender whales as bad. it now just shots straight out the back or when it does stick. it just falls off on the next bump in the road. i kind of don't like the way it looks. but, i works and thats all that matters to me.

I did mine because they where starting to rust out. I cut the rust out of them before folding. At first I didnt like the look of it that way but after some time and installing my front bumper it looks right now. Now in front of my front tire and behind the rear tire the body lines are the same hight and it looks right to me. Factory rear quarters look funny to me now. Also if you wheel on rocks and drop offs you dont have to worry about the quarter sitting down on something as you drop off of it. I would fold them if it was mine to do again.

I think the rear shackle is a little stronger then the thin sheet metal. It won't crush like the 1/4 panel will.
You say you don't like the look of it being cut, find a bumper that doesn't make you cut it.
OR cut it,install the bumper,& then like it.

I did it and I like it...They were rusted pretty much out. After the fold there was still small gaps...I got some "Great" Foam expanding foam insulator stuff from Home Deepblow. Sprayed one can per side up into the cavity so water had a tougher time accumulating in the void. Then a bondo seal, prime, paint, bed liner. It's the best option if the bottom of your quarters are rusted through. Enjoy.

Do it you will like it Does look retarded without a bumper wrapping around though. Got fresh cut and fold pics in the second build link in my signature.

thanks - i think im gonna just go with the C-rock bumper that wraps around to the quarter panels.
musclehead - i really like your build thread and i looked over 90% of it but it looks as tho you are running beefed up stock axles - how are they holding up?
