Default Cummins swap in a xj

So I'm looking to buy a Cherokee and I have some pretty interesting ideas for it. I was wondering of anyone has ever seen or knows about any one doing a Cummings 5.9 swap into the xj. if so if love to see it or hear how difficult and expensive it would be. Any help or suggestions would be awesome thanks y'all

you need to do two things:

1- open the hood of a cummins, and look at the motor.
2- open the hood of a XJ, and look how much room there is.

It could be done, I've seen a cummins 5.9 in a Camaro.... shaved oil pan, and a big hole in the middle of the hood. There will be so many challenges that come along with this project, but it would be awesome if you got it completed.
1. Jeep 4.0=500lbs. Cummins 5.9=1200lbs. Major suspension work would need to be done. Entire unibody would need to be stiffened.
2. Entire drivetrain replacement would be necessary, fitting a transmission that can take 5-600ft/lb torque into that Jeep tunnel might be difficult.
These are simply initial things to ponder.

If I were to do a diesel swap, it would probably be the Cummins 4bt. Those can be warmed up to stock 5.9 specs without much trouble, and weigh around 400lbs less than a 5.9. Finally, be prepared to spend about 3 times what the XJ is worth swapping a Cummins in. I have heard the 9k figure floated around by someone who has done a stock 4BT swap in their XJ.

BUT, all that said, please do this project, and make a very detailed write-up of it on the forum.

I was reading a thread where a dude did a Cummins swap into his grand cherokee. It was serious mod time. He pretty much rebuilt his vehicle from the ground up. Good luck.

i have never seen anyone use a "cummings" motor. If you want a cummins motor so you can go fast and have lots of torque then buy a dodge/ram truck. it has the correct axles, frame, transmission, wiring harness, hood clearance, and you didn't have to do any fab work at all.

You could look into a 3.9L 4bt cummins. It would be much easier than the 5.9 cummins. Still not an easy swap, but do-able.

God forbid you give too much throttle. The whole jeep would turn into twizzler

Thanks for the info guys. As cool as it would be to do this swap I'm probably not going to go through with it. Sounds like it would take to much time and money oh well
