Cross over steering deathwobble
I just installed a new crossover steering from Cavfab. Their product is awesome but im getting deathwobble. I can do 70 in a straight line fine, I hit a bump at 35 and its all downhill. I reamed out my knuckles to ensure they were straight. Reamed out the pitman arm. Measured my toe to 52" center bolt to center before and after install. Track bar is still the same. The bolts were torqued down, I am getting a little rotational play in the drag link. Do I not have the heim joints aligned correctly? Any help will be appreciated. I am taking it to get professionally aligned tomorrow. Also 4.5" lift. 31s.

This is a common problem with this type of steering. If you have the proper bend at the end of the drag link, move it below the steering arm and your tie rod above if you want. The trick is to have the drag link parallel with the track bar. If everything is tight, all will be well. Better get it professionally aligned too

I moved the drag link to above the pitman arm to ensure it was parallel with the track bar which helped a little. Im still getting rotational play in the drag link though. It is going to a shop tomorrow.

My DW also showed its face after a bunch of steering upgrades. I ended up having a toasted lower balljoint.

With an under the axle track bar the drag link above the pitman arm results in the best handling. I've had cav fab steering with 4.5" lift 5.5" lift. I've had a rubicon express track bar that went under the axle and the drag link above the pitman arm and it drove fine. Recently I did OTA track bar, I also put on a ZJ pitman arm, and put the drag link under the pitman arm and it drives great with this set up as well.

same problem here, I just have the cavfab crossover steering installed and now I get death wobble.

I know of 4 jeeps with their kit and not a single one I've driven has had death wobble

I have the stock pitman arm and 6 inch lift, I am pretty sure that has something to do.

I have the same problem.
Can anyone advise by looking at below pics if there is something wrong? In my opinion, the track bar is not parallel to the track bar. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...856accbd65.jpg and here I dont know if the pitman arm is stock or if it the right one for a 6.5 inch lift. also can anyone advise if the drag linkshould go under or on top of the pitman arm. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...0e320ffd07.jpg |
So, where should I start looking?

Yes, you are correct. The drag link and track bar are not parallel. I assume you have death wobble or something like it going on. Even if things are tight, the difference in angles can make problems when you hit a bump and set up a resonance just from give in the uniframe. To correct it you can move the tie rod up and put a little more bend in the drag link so it will clear the tie rod and put the drag link under the steering arm

I ran the exact steering set up with an under he axle track bar and never once had death wobble. I don't think it's the angles causing the issue. I think it's a worn out component.
|
So I took it to a shop and had it aligned. My right wheel bearing was worn out. I'm still getting death wobble after replacing it, but its not nearly as bad. Its still happening around 30-35 and I still have to slow down to about 10-15 to get it to stop. Its bump enduced so it has to be a worn out componet. I'll just keep going and keep this updated. Next I'm going to check ball joints and see where that leads me. I'm pretty sure my angles are alright and as close to parallel as possible from drag link to track bar.

Whats the difference between the XJ and ZJ pitman arm?
