converting 2wd to 4wd ?

I have a 1996xj 2.5 2wd and a 1989xj 4.0 4wd im wanting to convert the 2wd to 4wd using the 89 all parts are there and working on both should everything just swap over or not?

Because of the differences in transmissions and spline counts and whatnot in my mind it would be easier to swap the whole drivetrain out of the 89 to the 96.

or just drive the 89 the way it is and use the 96 for commuting and whatever else.

It can be difficult to convert 2wd to 4wd with all of the differences in parts. It will take a bit of time to do all of the work. If you are dead set on converting, try to get a jeep of the same model year. The 96 is an obd2 4 cyl, while the 89 is an obd1 4.0, with renix fuel injection. The differences in sensors and components will probably drive you crazy. If you can sell the 89 and buy a 96 to use, things will go smoother. It may cost a bit, but will save a lot of hassles with electronics and stuff.

I've been wanting to convert mine to 4wd, but the amount of work and expense would make it more worthwhile to just buy a 4wd xj.
