Default Cold Air intake

Ive heard some people tell me that a Cold air will make a vehicle louder, increase a FEW HP, and add MPG's. SLIGHT modifications!!?!? really interested in the performance you get with gas mileage... will it help me get 1 or 2 mpgs? I was going to get one but I want some opinions from some Cherokee guys who have cold airs. Also what is a GOOD brand?

Thanks,

CW

You'll probably lose 1-2mpg. More air means more fuel. The performance increase is very slight. Not really worth it unless you're stroked or running forced induction. YMMV and this is IMHO.

A few years back on a f150 forum they tested every single cold air intake on one truck on a dyno. Most of them did nothing some lost power and mpg only one brand did what it said it did.If your going to off road your xj i would look more in to a cowl snorkel or true snorkel.

I love my CAI.

Different vehicles handle air different ways, 4 and 6 cyl engines generally will accept cai better. Not because of the cold air, bc its not that cold. But because its easier and greater airflow.

you will not see any MPG gain, you will notice a more responsive throttle, off the line speed, but little to no power gains.

I use a rugged ridge cai. I love it. Way better than any other kit I've seen.

I had a "CAI" for a good year or two but once I started going off roading more I switched back, noticed it's a lot quieter now and due to the age of mine the blow by killed the filter and make a lot of mess. They just aren't worth the hassle imo

To intake cold air do a "cowl snorkle" or just "cowl intake". Homebrew for about $20 or get a Spectre kit for $200. Tons on here about that including a rather long one by dukie564

I have the spectre cowl induction CAI on my 98 xj. The install is very simple although there is trial and error as to whether it clears the hood. The craftsmanship is there to. For 150 bucks I wasn't expecting it to do anything except make noise. It made my 5 speed a little more enjoyable to drive around town, it's smoother going through the gears and when you get on the throttle it definitely has a little more pep than before. But understand that pep you gain comes with the noise increase and its pretty loud. I noticed the air filter does not let any dirt into the throttle body. Between oil changed il pop the filter open and there is always small amounts of dust on the cowl panel side, but after the filter, it's as clean as day 1 no lie. Need any info let me know

+1 for a Cowl Intake

I have a spectre, but the cowl is where you should get cold air from. Not inside the engine bay.

Also, don't get (make) a CAI for MPG and HP gains. You'll be disappointed when the placebo affect wears off. You really need the whole package to get good performance gains (intake exhaust, good running ignition and maybe 4hole injectors.) Even then, its not like a stroker.

What is a Cowl intake? I have no clue what you mean. I don't want a snorkel though. But I want my XJ louder so I figured a CAI would help with that.

What is a stroker? And I have a brand new high flow CAT with 2.5 in piping from the cat back... and a flowmaster 44 muffler. It sounds pretty good now but want a little more volume. So basically even a GOOD brand CAI will not help much? What a bummer!!! What else can I do to increase performance and gain volume. Do these chips work you think?

Chips are pointless on our 4.0s at least that's the generally opinion. I have no first hand experience with those.

A stroker is a motor that's been bores out to a higher displacement (a 4.0 turned to a 4.7 for example)

I'm not saying a CAI won't help just don't expect it to turn into a dragster. Lol Set expectations low and you may be surprised.

You will probably see more gain than just adding a CAI because your exhaust is already more free flowing.

Oh yeah man... i do not expect it to give it a lot of change. I expect very light mods... but every little bit helps. Its more for the sound than anything. And oh okay... that's pretty cool. How do you bore out an engine?? I have no clue on any of that stuff. And what is a Cowl intake?

Boring out an engine requires a complete rebuild. Its not a simple thing. Lol

Cowl intake...

That's mine. The Spectre version. There's various other ways of doing it. IF you want LOUD than I suggest getting the Spectre. It definitely makes noise.

Oh you just want it to be noisy? Glasspack it then. Cowl intake is for improving engine performance and making it better off-road. The noise is almost entirely in the cab.
