Cloyes Chain Kit: Did I set timing correctly?
I'm in the process of finishing up my engine rebuild and want to make sure I've got the timing set right by somebody with more experience with the Cloyes double roller chain set. I set cylinder 1 at TDC, set up the chain set with the timing marks on the cam and crank gears facing each other, and rotated the cam until the pin lined up with the hole in the gear. I'm using the 0° key way on the crank because I'm not sure if I can run advanced with the cam I put in... I'll experiment with that down the road.

Yep, that looks right. Be sure to read through all the "distributor and timing" thread that you can. I have found that most cam companies do not index the drive gear for the distributor so you'll need to make sure you get it in correctly.
What year is the motor/XJ? |
This is out of a '94 Xj. I'll have to dig around for that thread later. Thanks

That was my thread I started, but I know there is another one with pictures of the distributor. Before you install the distributor you should install the head and rockers and such. That way you can verify you are on compression stroke. I'll look for the other thread when i get home, or PM me and maybe you can just call me |
Thanks for the info. Last night I got the head on... waiting for my cousin to bring my 1/2" drive 12 point 1/2" deep socket back so I can torque it down. Once that's done I will check to be sure I'm on a compression stroke.
One quick question though. My cam has 3° advance timing built into it... how much will I see that in the rotor position on the distributor? Going by memory (Not currently at the shop) the rotor is pointing roughly 1/4"-1/2" before #1. Sound right? |
I'm thinking if you set the crank at 3* before TDC (according to the marks on the timing chain cover) your distributor rotor should be pointed just past #1 cylinder, just as if your cam was stock.
