XJs came with 44s but they are overpriced and a little rare. Find an 8.25 out of a 97-01 model, it has 29 spline shafts and is a good bit stronger than a 35 but it is c-clipped like newer 35s so disc brakes are a good upgrade as well.

Did you weld the spiders on an axle that sees street use?
I don't know what you use it for that you turned the tube, but get a replacement axle and stitch weld the tubes to the housing. It takes lots of skill to do, but will prevent that from happening and makes the axle a little less prone to flex.

I don't remember what year the rangers got the 8.8 but only the newest fx4 versions are decent. The rest are 28 spline and the shafts are only slightly stronger than a c clip D35. Not worth the time it would take to install it and you'd need wheel spacers as well.

I believe 4/0L rangers got the 8.8, the 4 cyl and 3.0L's got the 7.5" rear axle.
Newer Explorers are better donors for their disk brakes, but if you've got a Ranger axle already, it doesn't get any cheaper than that. Run it till it breaks, then switch it up again.
If it's too much narrower, you may need wheel spacers to clear the springs.

all in and working just put a couple washers on on 1 wheel and have to hook up brake lines but need L fittings to go around springs

Not sure what L fittings are but I wouldn't put washers on your lugs. If your lug nuts don't have enough threads they will loosen themselves and you wheels will fall off.
