Can I get a solid answer on the steering box swap?

I've read and read and read and I don't see any clear cut answers, only assumptions and maybes.

I want to replace my steering box with something else.

What year S-10 box will work? There are different part numbers for 2wd and 4wd and with and without Z82 suspension or V6 or 4 banger. Different numbers for different years.

I know the Durango box is a NON-Plow 98-99 V8 but I've read the S-10 box is better and uses bearings and doesn't diminish turning radius.

Thanks guys

I have also been wondering this and researching to find mostly nothing! Thank you for posting this thread!

I thought s10's had a 4 bolt steering box?

I have no real knowledge of this subject I have just heard of people doing it. I have seen it included in peoples upgrade lists and in Craigslist adds but have never seen a real thread about doing it.

The stock box with a brace and frame spacer/plate installed will run big tires for years. The Durango swap ends up very similar to the original in terms of performance, If it was a smoking gun people would be all over it, but I think it's a low cost, low gain upgrade, IMHO.

Agreed. Been there and back- XJ stock box is best, in my opinion.

I have an OBDII reader for my '99. One of the statistics is calculated engine load. I noticed a (slightly) greater load at idle with the Durango pump than the XJ pump. I reverted to the XJ pump a week ago and the steering and turning radius feels "back to normal" (as much as it can in a lifted setup). I initially chose to install the Durango box with intentions to beef it up, but then I never broke the stock box in the first place.

Cool, thanks guys. Does anyone have info on the S-10 box?

I have an 86 xj and I know my box is weaker. And I've also heard the s10 boxes are a stronger bolt in. I can barely turn on flat ground and I have a new pump. My buddies xj has a Durango box and that was a big improvement for him
