cam shaft and lifters

My 91 xj needs a new lifter and i know that when you replace one lifter you should replace all of them plus the cam shaft. I like getting better parts for more hp torque and mpg so what quality brands would be suggested without killing my account? Plus what else do i need like gaskets, o-rings, etc?

Have you ever done anything like this before?

Nope

A new cam is definitely not a beginners job, there's a lot that can go wrong. Comp Cams run about $145 last time I checked, but then you also need stiffer valve springs.

I'm not a complete amateur under the hood. Plus my neighbor is a mechanic and has done things like this many times. I found a Mopar camshaft and lifter complete kit for a little over 200. Still would need stiffer valve springs though huh?

Sorry, you didn't specify so I assumed. For a stock spec cam the stock springs will be fine.

If you need to replace the cam then you need to do other work as well when doing so your friend needs to advise you on them as far as all that is needed. I would do quite a few others if it were me like a complete valve job if compression were good, or really I would just do an overhaul top and bottom. I hate doing things half a$$ed so usually go whole hog when something is worn out like that in a stock engine unless I plan on dumping it on quickly.
