I thought the driveshafts might not be the same length, due to different pinion lengths? The 8.25 has a longer pinion if I recall correctly.

They are the same.
I've done this with my 88. It's a direct fit with brakes and yoke to drive shaft.
Just the axle tubes are a little wider so new U bolts will be needed. Just measure the width of the tube to find the right ones.

Me too, had to slot the holes on my D35 plates. It worked but was a PITA. Save yourself the trouble and grab a set of 8.25 plates from the junkyard. If you can't find a Cherokee with an 8.25 it looks like the plates from a 2wd Dakota are the same.
