Building axles, have question
Ok so, I'm a mechanic for a living, not an express tech, you name it I can do it, but gears are one thing that I have never done or even assisted in. I know the basics but that's it. Now, with that being said, I have a set of waggy 44s with 3.08 gears. My parts list that I currently have,
-4.88ring and pinion
-Spartan locker(rear)
-all necessary brackets for swap
What I'm going to order soon
-ziplocker (front)
-carrier for larger gears(rear)
The carrier and air locker comes with carrier bearings and shims. Now, I know I will want to replace my pinion and tube seals, but what else will I need? I'm planning on using the old bearings for set up bearings. I'm trying to keep it cheap by not buying a whole kit so I don't pay for something I already have, and I get a decent discount at the local parts stores threw my work. And before I get told,I have a guy who has done a bunch of gears who is going to be setting them up, but I can't get a hold of him and would like to order everything tonight.
Thanks, Jake

You want "master install kits" for both axles. Those have all new bearings and seals you need. And I'd recommend putting the air locker in the back.

Like he said get the master install kits that way you get the shims too. X2 on the air locker in the rear that way on the street you won't feel either locker.

Old bearings as set-up bearings is a bad idea. They've already worn and are not the same dimensionally as your new bearings. You'll find that your pattern is way off when you finally press on your new bearings.
BTDT....too many times.
Skip the set up bearings entirely and use a clamshell style puller to R&R bearings.
The only set up bearings I ever use are the outer pinion bearings.

Noted on the bearings. And I do more rocks then anything, so I see it being more beneficial running selectable up front so I can control it and turn tighter without binding when necessary
