Bike Mounting Options

I have a pretty large Surco Safari rack on my xj, I had a bud tell me there was a cheap effective way to mount a bike up there with some type of block..maybe a skewer block. Any ideas what these are or how they would work....ive done some searching with little avail. let me know!:001_huh:

Try this:

We used these on the front of a truck bed and they worked great. You can get them cheaper, just the first I found.

but i like the idea of the thule rack. but i have 20mm axles and this skewer mount won't work for me.

auburn_XJ 02-16-2012 01:04 AM

Stand it up in the middle and wrench it down with ratchets. I do it. It'll work fine.

Xj88 02-16-2012 05:51 AM

Ill have to see the block im not sure how it'll mount...as far as the ratchets you have a picture of this? I need it to stand up and be able to take down quick

auburn_XJ 02-16-2012 09:10 AM

I would but I got snow board gear up there right now

That's pretty much it. It can bolt to one of the crossbars pretty easily. I like these because it lowers the profile with the front wheel off.

Me too. Thule makes a good 20mm thru-axle adapter, part#53020. I work in the cyclery business and we have plenty of those quick release fork mounts lying around if you need a couple.

Basslicks 02-16-2012 01:38 PM

you can get some with pre-drilled mounting holes... just bolt them to the very front of your rack on the inside on the floor.... they take up hardly any room... then you would have to worry about the block pivoting or moving free of the ratchet strap

I have two mounted on yakima round cross bar tubes... so i don't have to worry about that part.... works great though

crux 02-16-2012 03:08 PM

Get one of the fork mounts for the front and a piece of C-channel for the back wheel strapping it down. Works great. Hell it works for Yakima and others. Now just need to find a 25mm fork mount for my 29er rigid bike.

Basslicks 02-17-2012 10:09 AM

so wish I had a 29er.... not a rigid though

29er is a great bike. rigid might be a bit harsh, but then again it has no suspension. Frame and truss fork flex giving it a more comfy ride over a standard straight bladed fork. Should get the frame back from fabrication next week I'm hoping as it has been a long time out.

awesome... I'm runnin' a Gary Fisher Montare - from like '96... has a rockshox indy xc front fork... only problem it's about 17" frame and I'm 6'1 so I've been needing to upgrade to a bigger size for a while... I'm trying to hold out for an enduro frame 'cause I've wanted one since I built my first one at the bike shop I worked at back in the day... could have gotten one for less than half retail but I never came up with the money

You could use those mounts to do what I did. Just add some brackets to the back to reinforce them though.

Basslicks 02-18-2012 08:48 AM

I like that a lot... kudos

xjadventurer 06-02-2012 03:42 PM

man that's a cool way to carry your bikes.
Great Job.

I like that idea and I've got two of those mounts laying around from a previous setup. I also have two bikes, one is a road bike with a carbon fork. Do you think that would be too much stress on the fork hanging it like that?

$12 used at SAVERS, can pull a trailer while hauling 3 bikes, and not get my bike ripped off the roof when I drive into my garage.

Hardly "advanced" tech. Old school tech maybe

Real bikes are built, not bought :innocent:

Basslicks 07-27-2012 12:12 AM

Those are great mounts... if you hook the straps on right, you can still raise your hatch with the bike on too... just have to make sure your struts are up to par.

Squelchtone 04-20-2014 08:00 PM

I have Thule feet and load bars on my old daily driver which I am selling to the next guy who will be putting his kayaks on top, so I am left with the challenge of somehow mounting my Thule Peleton 517 bike trays to the stock XJ roof bars which are wide and flat compared to the Thule square tube load bars. I do not want to spent $400 bucks on a Cherokee specific foot pack and new 58 inch load bars, and really want to use the stock jeep roof rack bars on my 01 XJ.

Not sure if there is an adapter kit for this, or if I will be making my own U bolts or brackets to get the bike tray mounted up there and have it be nice and snug.

Thanks for any help or ideas,
Squelchtone

[EDIT: I just went out side and put the Thule bike tray on top of the factory rack bars and I have an idea. I could use the stock U bolt and carriage bolts and plates IF I drill a hole for one of the bolts in the front and rear factory roof rack bars. Would water and eventual rust be of any concern if I make these holes? I dont want to end up buying new factory load bars but drilling them and maybe putting in silicone caulking into the holes as I insert the bolts sure would make quick work of this small project.]

Basslicks 04-27-2014 09:35 AM

There's always a concern with rust on exposed metal. If you use a good sealant like a marine-grade silicone or seam sealer, you should be fine. I have a hole drilled through my roof for my roof-light wiring and I have a plastic wire grommet as well as some heavy duty GE marine-grade silicon. Been up there for about 1.5-2 years now... Hasn't leaked the first time and no rust!
