Default Better Gas Tank Skid?

Hey guys I am interested in purchasing a gas tank skid for my cherokee. Which seems better? JCR Offroad or rustys?

i would have to go with the jcr.

same thickness, but the jcr has better mounting with ties into the rear crossmember.

I am interested as well. Do you know if an off-road bumper would first have to be removed, or can the skid plate be installed over the bumper mount on the frame, after of course removing the bolts and/or nuts?

I have the JCR gas tank and Tcase skid. They are as tough as they get. I recommend any of their products. Super cool guys too. If you want pics, let me know.

Save your money and get a GC skid from the junkyard. Drill a few holes, repaint it and slap it in. Then you can actually have some fuel in the tank to protect with the extra money you saved. If you're still running 31's and a 3" lift, I doubt you'll be able to put it down hard enough to need anything more than the already beefed up GC skid. I've beat the hell out of mine and its still holding strong with no dents.

They are about 1/20th the cost of an aftermarket one

Rusty's won't fit your 01. I have theirs and had to cut off the back because 97-01 XJs have a larger tank. They say it fits all XJs but they're wrong.

That must be a new thing because 6 months ago they only sold one and it was "supposed" to fit all years.

Yep I pulled mine from a GC in the yard for $15 and it works great

Does it matter which year GC and can it be installed over an off-road bumper (of course removing the bolts/nuts used to secure the bumper) which mounts to the frame like a receiver hitch?

Yes it works with a receiver hitch so it will work fine with your bumper. I have a link for a write up on it I'll post tomorrow, its on my computer and I'm on my phone right now.

Modify a stock skit, add some 3/16" plate to beef it up.

Only ZJ models which is like till 98 not sure when that model started like 93 or 94 maybe. Only requires drilling one hole and enlarging 2 others. Some reciver hitches you will have to notch the skid. With my hidden hitch i had to notch it.

Few pics on page 19 of my build thread here https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f46/mu...10410/index19/
