I use ATF in my power steering, no issues at all.

Chilton, Hayes, Both! And you gotta read em. It's not what you remember as long as you remember where to look it up.
With only 594000+km on the Peep original power steering pump, we are now running 80% Lucas steering fluid (yes, Snake Oil). Light leak at pully shaft, still steers fine and no hard spots or noise but I don't expect to be runnin the same pump when we roll the million. I's say the pump is not For your 98, if you have no current issues with the pump, just use a name brand power steeing fluid (don't go cheap on your fluids), ATF will have seal swelling additives, you may not need them (yet).
I use a dollar store turkey baster for pulling fluid out of things like the steering pump reservoir and then refill with the fresh. Don't overfill and check the level regularly when you are checking all your other fluids. You do check em?

Go with a brand offered at your local auto supply store, add to the marks on the small dipstick under the cap (hot vs cold level). You may still get morning squeek, frosty mornings here I get squeek every day, gone as the belt and pullies warm up and dry off.

Power steering fluid Mopar®P/N 04883077 Hydraulic fluid / Power steering fluid (MS5931)
MS5931 IS THE ONLY FLUID THAT CAN BE USED FOR THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Important note:
The factory fill power steering fluid for all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees is a unique fluid, MS5931. ATF+4 (MS9602) should not be mixed or used as a “topping off” fluid on the Grand Cherokee WJ. All WJ models should be serviced using ONLY the special MS5931 fluid. ATF+4 is NOT an approved Power Steering Fluid and should never be used under any circumstances. Note that all fluids will darken in color with usage and fluid color is no longer an indication of fluid condition.

If you go to your Chrysler dealer and buy a bottle it's just ATF +4 in a power steering fluid bottle. So that's what I've always run. Unless you have the electric power steering pump, then just pick up a bottle from a Chrysler dealer

ATF +4 is fine for the power steering pump, or generic power steering fluid

I put in a bottle of that Royal Purple synthetic power steering fluid and my pump definately sounds quieter.
