2.5 is as big as I'd run. I work at a midas I built a system for my XJ if you try and run 3" it will crimp at the bends going over the axle and will cause a clearance issue with the spring hanger, unless you drop it way down. then you'll just smash it anyways when you go wheeling.

Thats what it is there for. So there are not 20 noobs asking the same S*** every freakin day. Everyday is tuesday anymore.
Go on youtube and look at different exhaust setups on that site. 2.5 is common and 3" is used for 4.7's. You can buy adapters at any auto parts stores in the exhaust section so you dont have to change your muffler. Why make it 3" from the cat back? Go 2.5 cat back. Its cheap and easy to do.

it's a minor restriction but in reality unless you've got a built motor I hardly doubt you'd notice the difference. I'm running a 40 series flowmaster, 2.5" from the cat back. I was still running the stock tailpipe til last week. the main reason I built a new tailpipe was to tuck it up higher under the truck and the stock pipe was pretty rusty. I can't "feel" any difference in performance maybe on a dyno but I don't know. I do know it will be a lot harder to hit my tailpipe on obsticals now when I'm out wheeling.
