Best rod for welding axle tubes
I want to weld the axle tubes to the center section on a ford 8.8 to keep it from rotating. Any advice on rods or technique? Don't have a mig strong enough so it has to be stick welded.

Ya know that is my first thought. But I have read so much about the tubes spinning in the housing I thought I might try it. Is it possible I am over thinking this?

IIRC something with high nickel content is best for that (either that or something with low nickel so...). It can be done with any though if you are careful about warming and cooling the housing. Using proper technique and rod will just make it all easier

Most packages are labeled with their intended use. I also reccomend pre-heating with torches prior to welding, not so much cherry red just pre-heated.

Welding to the tubes of 8.8 to the center section is essential! I won't gear one without doing so. I was on a trail ride a few years ago and got to witness a Ford 8.8 spin the tubes in the centersection. The pinion was nose-up at a 45 deg angle.
7018 does a good job, but 8-60 is prefered for mild steel to cast steel.
I use my 220 mig and run a bead all the way around the tubes. Pre and post heat to 450-600 deg. and you'll be fine.

OK a lot of different rods wil work for welding cast.. but the Correct Rod is High nickel rod.
Also the correct procedures involves degreasing/wire wheeling.. preheating the cast section. Also welding in short 1-2" section and alternating sides, to keep the heat even. then cooling it slowly/evenly.
I prefer using kitty litter or sand and packing the welded cast in it to slow cooling down.
