Best Programmer?
With gas prices nearing $4 and my XJ getting only 12 city, I'm in the market to buy a PCM programmer. Since my 96 is OBDII I think I'll be able to use one. What programmer do you guys think will give me the most bang for the buck? If anyone on here is running their XJ with one, tell me about it! Thanks!

^^x2 from the factory the jeep PCM is tuned as best as you will get it there is nothing TO tune. (which is a good thing).
do you have bigger tires? have you regeared? what are the specs of your jeep?
when is the last time you did a tune up?
even with 3.07 gearing and 33's I get more than 12mpg in the city(14-16mpg)..... on the freeway I get 12mpg tho.

IF I were to buy one I would get the EDGE kit. but thats because I like most there products.
Chips/programmers do make a difference. is it worth the $$$$$ for what they actually do though??? to each there own. but i would rather put the money somewhere else. gears, lockers, maintenance ect...
for most of the "programmers" you could get 10-13 tanks of gas. 500-700$
that would take a VERY LONG time to make it justified for the money.. i would rather put it straight into my tank...

I have 31s, a 3 inch lift, and a flowmaster 40 muffler. Other than a few cosmetic mods and some stereo stuff, she's pretty much stock.
As far as tuneups go, because it was misfiring I replaced my plugs with champion coppers and installed a set of MSD plug wires at around 3k miles ago.
I cleaned my throttle body and intake out with TB cleaner at around 5k miles ago.
I replaced my air filter at around 4,500 miles ago.
My catalytic converter was recalled for rattling and it was replaced at the dealership with a newer style cat at around 7k miles ago.
One of the reasons why I need to get a progammer is because I need to calibrate my speedometer to account for the larger tires. I got a speeding ticket because I haven't done so yet, and I'm going to court for it thursday .
My XJ gets the worst gas mileage ever lol

My phone is a Motorola droid 2 and I have tons of GPS apps on it lol. The 31s don't set off the odometer too bad so I get a pretty accurate gas mileage reading. I still need to get a programmer to calibrate my speedo regardless. I have to pay a $150 ticket, and I don't want to do another one so i kind of think it may pay itself off in the long run haha

yup since it is a gear driven system it is 1 bolt to swap the gear out...
and have you checked your TB lately to see how much gunk is back in it?
o2 sensors? --- number one reason for bad gas mileage
if your TB is dirty with carbon again, sea foam the engine out, then get new o2 sensors.

speedo gears
How do you figure out which gear you need? Ive searched and seen people say they used a 34tooth.. but one chart says 36, and another 39... is there a formula? (all examples for my setup 4.56/33")

Don't the OBDII XJs use the PCM for gauge readings? The only reason I really think that the 96-01 Cherokees don't utilize a speedo gear setup is because when I did my cluster swap, all that connected to it was two plugs. The earlier OBDI XJs have a speedo cable with a small gear on it to give the speedometer/odometer reading.

the newer xj's and TJ's use a gear still. however this gear spins a magnet in a sensor and trips the amount of revolutions it see's and turns it into a pulse signal. then the pcm interprets the pulse and sends the signal to the speedo. but no there is no cable. but there is still a gear. like this. http://jeepsunlimited.com/zj/speedo/speedo.htm

Great idea man! I've been looking into getting new o2 sensors actually. The worst thing about a bad O2 sensor is that they usually don't throw codes so you never know if it needs replacement or not. I'm sure that mine are pretty spent so I'll replace them when I get a little cash on hand.

shop around NAPA for o2 sensors. the NAPA closest to my house wanted $65 for the upper sensor,a NAPA 8 miles away only wanted $45 for the same sensor. NGK brand exact fit, don't buy the universal sensors.
