AX15 SYE Driveshaft - Rough Country?
 

I just installed a Advanced Adapters sye on my NP231. Since my rig is an AX15, a traditional front AW4 XJ shaft will not work. I picked up a 98 V8 ZJ front shaft as a lot of people said to do and while it fits yoke to yoke, the slip joint BARELY has any room left to move. I'm afraid it will slip out and fail when wheeling.

To get something that will fit better, I figure I'll have to go aftermarket. I know Tom Woods is THE driveshaft to get but at a cost. Has anyone used or have any feedback on this shaft from Rough Country? Fully extended length is 35" so it should work.

I need a shaft this week as I'm supposed to go on a wheeling trip this weekend. Any other options I should consider?

Surprisingly for RC this shaft is very good. I have used one for the last 4+ years and beat it silly and it is the only shaft that has held up. Just be sure to lube it. In fact I bought another one for my other XJ.

There's also Adams Driveshaft.http://www.adamsdriveshaftoffroad.com A couple of friends in our group run these and have been pleased. Looks like 265 for a rear shaft.

For a quality custom shaft, try Adam's or Tatton's. Both heavy duty. If you would like a custom fit stock type, than try the third link.
You will need a measurement, center-cap to center-cap.

The ZJ shaft has different lengths according to year/transfer case.
Could it be that you have the 31" and not the 33"

I'm using an Adam's off ebay. $235 with shipping a couple of months ago.

my suggestion is find a local driveshaft shop and take your old junk yard shaft there for a quick retubing. check the CV for play (get a good grip on it and see if it clicks back and forth). if it has no play and has good mobility, the drive shaft shop should be able to reuse it. you can even have the drive shaft shop check it and they'll show you if it's good or bad.

then they'll probably need 3 measurements. with your driveline removed measure from the tcase yoke to the axle yoke:
top of yoke - top of yoke
center of yoke - center of yoke
bottom of yoke - bottom of yoke

these 3 measurements should be enough for them to retube your drive shaft (ask for a thicker wall tube as well for more strength). shouldn't be too expensive either!

That's what I did. I needed something quick. It's ready to be picked up today!

My Tatton shaft lasted 1 year.

how much did that cost to have it re-tubed?

$134 and they balanced it. Installing it today - I hope it and everything else works.

that's pretty good deal.

I bought a new custom shaft for mine from Dave's Driveshaft Service on eBay for $199 it came with the large Spicer joints as well.
