AW4 ?
I have a 89 4.0 auto MJ and need a "new" AW4. Can I only use one from the renix years? And does a 2.5 4wd also use a AW4? If so can I use it? thanks

You can use other AW-4's.. up until 98 i think it is. They changed the harness plug at around that time.
Your better off getting a Renix era trans if your rig is 4wd however, then you wont have issues with the spline count not matching to your transfercase. Unless of course you find a good deal on a mated set to swap in.
You'll need to do something with a later non vacuum transfercase if you have the Vac disconnect front axle. Not difficult though.
There was an AW4 behind the 4cyl... but it's very rare. If you did find one of these that vehicle should have factory 4:56 gearing in the diffs. I'm also not sure if the 4cyl aw4 will bolt to the 4.0 block, might be as easy as a bellhousing swap.
