For wheeling serious, AW4.
But for light wheeling, daily driving, going camping, etc., give me a standard. Plus I can tell it exactly what gear I want it in, and engine breaking is awesome.

My first 4x4 was in 1974 an auto then in 79 another that time a 4 spd. After that time except for tow trucks the winch's (pto driven) had to use a std. trans. 4 of those. With living and working in the mountains I had my fill of std trans for a 4x4 for off road use weaker and the clutch issue always a problem off road for 1 and 1 1/2 ton tow trucks.
Now all I will buy are autos for off road or DD'ers plus any manual is a deduct as far as any resale value goes and harder to sell period.

Owned a towing company for years and have had all the fun shifting to last someone else's lifetime on top of mine.

I specialized in mountain recovery lots of Jeep tows being they don't stuck and you can't roll one over lol. My best truck for hitting the trails back then was a 1 ton Dodge 4x4 duel boom setup, and lots of cable.
I still remember when going down a very steep trail with a Jeep on the back in low range (4.88's) when a u-joint popped on ft driveshaft.

I'd like to have a manual trans. I've always opted for them because of simplicity and fun. most automatics aren't as reliable as the aw4 so choosing the manual option for the vehicle was the thing to do. I've been looking into this swap myself. I won't trade this jeep for a factory ax15 jeep, so my only option is a swap. I'd like to buy a cheap ax15 jeep to use as a parts catalogue then sell what's left.
