If your jeep isn't sentimental I'd probably sell I and buy one with a manual already in it. Else the easiest thing would be to buy another jeep with a blown engine or that's been wrecked and swap everything. You'll need a bunch of random **** that you'll probably forget or not think of until you're about to bolt the new tranny up.

You may want to reconsider changing to a weaker trans, but if you do you will need to buy a second XJ that has a manual in it so you will have all the pieces that you will need. Along with changing the gears in both differentials or swapping them from the other XJ.
Its quite a lot of work and you should have a shop to work in this time of year because of the time involved in the swap.

Why would he need to change gears? That is completely unnecessary.
OP, there are thousands of threads on this topic. Search using google and I promise you will find something.

This thread is the most detailed I've found on a swap like this, but there are many more. I'm getting ready to attempt this swap as well, mostly because I already have the parts vehicle so it was more my attempt at saving money....and I love driving with a 5spd.

Totally agree with the OP, manuals are awesome
Me personally bought a 2000XJ with a blown AW4, and ending it up swapping an AX-15 from a 92, not the one I want (internal slave) but the one I was able to get for cheap.
New master clutch cylinder, new slave and lines, get used pedal asembly, new clutch and hands on
Couple of days later I was driving the XJ without any issue!
Did not worry about the gear ratio, it feels good and drives awesome, no need to worry, also I swapped the speedo gear from the old TC to the new one, so speed reading is as good as it used to be with the old tranny

OP - search out an AX15 for sure. You can learn a lot on the swap from Novak - don't be shy to call them for information.
That's a domestic/american mentality. look at the rest of the world and you will not find this to be true. Still though, to each their own. Drive the 4.0 with a manual and you will easily see why it's better.
Yes, yes they are. I will NEVER own anything automatic.

I drive a stick myself but it's all about skill and preference. I would go with Mr white's suggestion unless there's some other overiding factor. Not worth the effort when there's plenty of availability. However, don't worry about strength of ax15's. The kind of abuse that would break one would break the auto as well.

I never said that the AX15's blew up all the time my statement was from an overall use/GVWR/cost factor during ownership. These were from what I had found from fleet usage of the 2 trans in same type trucks 3/4 ton over 200k mi a trading point. There are not a single manual trans that is made today for light trucks that is rated higher than an auto, and has not been for quite a few years now.
Personally I would like to try an XJ with an AX15 in it some time on the trails to see how it does.

-Anybody who's toasting clutches frequently will be doing even more damage to an auto trans.
-Where did you read that? because Novak's site has the AW4 listed as a light duty transmission and the AX15 as a medium duty transmission.
You're probably not going to actually 'break' either transmission, and the aw4 is a decent trans in it's own right.. but the AX15 will handle far more abuse before it craps out on you.
