take off the hub assembly. then remove the axel shafts

removed u-joint, sanded dow axel shafts for paint

drained the diff, removed the carrier. teeth look great

further inspection showed some rust. took a wire brush to it. came right off. no damage done

time to install. new thrust washers, cross shaft, and cross shaft pin. tolerances were perfect. just in the middle of the required margins.
