2: unbolt everything related to the A/C
3: run an idler pulley and bracket in place of compressor.

You can purchase a bypass pulley, you use the same sized belt. Super easy install.
Get the refrigent out of the system (unless it's already empty), take off the belt, unplug the electrical connector to the compressor, undo the 2 metal lines running to the back of the compressor, take off the 4 bolts holding the compressor onto the fan clutch bracket, bolt on the bypass pulley with the 4 bolts that come with the pulley and put the belt back on. Bam, done.
You could also remove the A/C condenser and take out all the A/C lines just to clean up the engine bay.
I read somewhere that you could relocate the alternator to the compressors original location. I'm not sure where but use the search feature.
