any upgrade axles that are about same width as xj?
I want to get upgrade axles for my cherokee. anything bout the same width as cherokee axles? not looking to shorten any axles either? and I don't really want d44 or 8.8
whats wrong with the 44 and 8.8? how big a tire do you plan to run?
35s for now. 38s in a year or two maybe
oh i see. yeah for that size you'll want at least a 60 front, 14 bolt rear. i dont know of anything that comes close to stock xj width though. 14 bolts are probably the most common and most budget friendly swaps for the rear. the front is going to cost a lot more. Dana 60 is all i can think of for the front
what needs done to put a 60 up front? why is it so hard
It takes ALOT of fab work. A ford 8.8 rear and a dana 44 front would work. If you beefed them both you you should never have to worry about them again. What gears are you running/plan on running?

I'm 3.55 right now. I'm gonna go 4.56 or 4.88
a 44 wont last with 38s shafts are no stronger then the dana 30. for tires over 35 you need a 60 or a 609 or some other one ton axle
if a d44 is no stronger than a d30 why do people upgrade to a d44?
Dana 30s in newer models use 44 sized u-joints. The shafts and ring gear are bigger on a 44 and they are stronger.
still have the same outers as a 30 and a fairly week housing you run 38s on a 30 or 44 you'll bend the Cs and the tubes. To me its not worth the work to put in a 44 when a 60 is the same amount of work to put under a XJ for a much stronger axle
putting new axles up front take alot of fab work and $$
i suggest you check out NAXJA and Pirate4x4 and start researching alot also, from what the interwebs have told me (i've done alot of research as im building a front dana 44) 37's are usually the max for the dana 44 if its fully built and you don't have a heavy right foot. if your going 38's your going to want to start looking into dana 60s and 14 bolts as mentioned. |
a local here is running front and rear 44s on 38 tsl sx. and he's just locked and he's linled in the rear. he drives daily and wheels the piss out of it with no problems

8.8 is just about the strongest axle you can get that will be the same width as an XJ (within an inch)
in a 4.0 powered xj, you will never break an 8.8 on 38's.....and id love for someone to show me otherwise |
