Default Alternator failing to test

I had some credit at the local pull-a-part, so I picked up a CS144 alternator for free (out of a '96 Deville). Thought it may make for a good upgrade over my stock, and currently dead, alternator.

Took it over to Advance, and their verdict was....interesting.

It failed at the "Light signal" stage, I believe. But his comment was that it was weird, as the machine didn't actually turn the alternator at all.

Thoughts? Take it back to the yard and search for another? Rebuild it?

Sorry if this is the wrong section...I figured that since it's non-stock; modified would be the place to put it?

I would throw it on the jeep and test it myself. Easy to do.

Not a bad plan. I need to fab up the bracket anyway...so whether it works or not, it'll still be useful for a template.

That'll be next week....in the meantime, I popped the case, just to take a look.

Hmmm. Still worth bothering?

Basically you have your electromagnet and your field coil.

There is an ohms test for both. And to ground both should read oL. Don't know the ohms off hand. I always prefer a working voltage test.

Then you should have a rectifier there also. Usually a 6 or 12 diode test. Pos/neg oL on half, .500 (close) on other half.

Again, working voltage is better.
