your best bet is to decide where you want to be/end up, and then start asking specifics. like if you really like somebody's jeep, ask them what lift they used, or what tires they are using. and go from there.
I was in your shoes 12 months ago. Knowledge comes with time and experience. Just read a ton on here. In particular the lift section. Also, try to find on google a section that explains all the acronyms used on here. Took me way to long to figure out what an SYE was (slip yoke eliminator). Tons and tons of abbreviations and acronyms are used on here.

It's hard to know where to start, and these boards can be a bit overwhelming if you don't have a starting point. But there's a book! The High-Performance Jeep Cherokee Xj Builder's Guide 1984-2001 by Eric Zappe is an excellent primer that will familiarized you with all the terms and give you an idea what's possible. It's actually available in electronic format through Google Books. I read it on my computer.
Once I read that, I started reading these boards every single day:
OEM Cherokee Tech
Modified Cherokee Tech
Cherokee Chat
You don't have to read everything. But when you see a thread title that interests you, read it. You'll find all sorts of starting points for further research, and eventually you'll be ready to plan your own build.

Bad *** for what? What do you plan on doing with it? What is bad *** to me might be lame to you. Are you going to be mudding? Playing in the rocks? Driving down the beach? Hanging out at the mall?
The jeeps stock suspension is good but a long arm kit will make it better,If your asking about axle swaps those take a lot of money and welding. If you need to swap axles or not depends tire size and how you use the jeep.

walk before you run.
learn to wheel your jeep stock or with a budget lift. then see if you even like trail riding before you waste a lot of time and money.
your fuel mileage will suffer with larger tires or mud tires in general.
wheel it for a season and then you can ask yourself where you want to be with your jeep. you will also know a lot more at that point.
welcome to the sport.
