I've only worked on the end of the cat to the end of the exhaust pipe so I'm not sure if it's any different before the cat

I will be interested in what you find as I will need to do a similar replacement on my 2000 before long. I will be looking for something basically to stock configuration. I see that an OE Mopar muffler and tail pipe is available from Chrysler but it is expensive at over $500. Part number is 52101262AH and may help in finding equivalents. Unfortunately no dimensions are listed. Also available is a cheaper version at around $140 from Chrysler, p/n E0021489AA. I want something that will fit without messing around and having it bang into floor and frame.

On both my Cherokee and my Comanche there were sections of 2.5" pipe and 2.25" pipe. Personally I just go to a muffler shop and have him do my exhaust work. Much better than all the replacement kits I've seen, and if for some reason it does end up making contact somewhere I can go back to him and get him to fix it. On my Cherokee I have a flowmaster super 44 which fits without hitting, but is a good bit louder than factory. It is shorter though so you would need a short section of extra pipe. In my Comanche I have a thrush turbo muffler which was around $25 and is pretty quite. I think it maybe a little shorter than factory too, but there isn't much factory exhaust left on that truck so I can't say for certain. In my personal experience a muffler shop is better than a diy kit. I think with a muffler I was quoted a touch under $300 from header to bumper on my Comanche.

On my 2000,,its 2.5 into the cat,,2.25 out.

Me,, I dont mind working on exhaust stuff.
I do all my own work on the Jeeps. So DIY kits are cool for me..

But Satirical has a good point on having a shop deal with it.
If anything needs fixing he can take it back and they will fix.
Sometimes you just dont feel like dealing with it..

Yes. True that. I’m going to take it in on Friday to a muffler shop. $650 seems ok with full cat and all. Thank you for all the help!

I love working on my jeep myself and I've done tons of stuff to both of them, but I know there is no way I can get the same quality with a diy kit or trying to do it myself without a kit. He in house mandrel bends pipe and he can stretch or shrink it too. It's cool just watching him do it.

i got a thrush glass pack from auto zone right around that $25 mark, did exactly as you are describing, it is a little louder than stock, has a considerably lower pitched drone to it but I'm happy with its performance.

I ended up buying this off Amazon $28.00 shipped , It sounds mellow but I need to put on the tailpipe and button things up. This is 2 1/4 center inlet and a 2 1/4 offset outlet it fits up nice on a 2000 XJ . Also you have to add a little pipe in is shorter than you oem muffler.

Question Need new exhaust system; header, pipes, whole thing.

1993 Jeep XJ

I need a new system. The header has a hole and the pipes are cracked in two different places. I am thinking about just getting a new header and getting a local shop to make new pipes out of 2.5". I'll keep the existing muffler and cat. Don't really care about the sound more about fuel efficiency and power.

has anyone done this? What's the best header for the price in terms of fuel mileage and power? While I'm at it should I change out the intake manifold?

Default 2001 header and down pipe question.

I've got a 2001 xj, with a crack in the exhaust manifold. Besides some grinding on the intake manifold, would a '99 header with a '99 down pipe bolt up to the rest of the exhaust piping. I realize I'll need to also put bungs on the down pipe to put the o2 sensors in.
I'm a semi decent fabricator, I'm just looking for an inexpensive route to take with this cracked exhaust manifold.

Thanks.

If you have cats in the manifold and you go to a manifold without cats you'll have a constant check engine light. Sometimes you can use an o2 sensor spacer, but it's not guaranteed that it will get rid of the check engine light.
