Default air shocks

This question has no doubt been asked before but I don't find a thread. When camping with my '97 Cherokee (no lift), I like to use a hitch mounted cargo carrier for a lot of my camping gear. This causes the rear suspension to really sag, causing it to drag thru uneven intersections, etc. I don't like the air leveling kits...I have one on my truck and the ride is way too harsh. Anybody have experience installing a quality brand of air adjustable shocks on a Cherokee? I'd sure like to avoid much of a degradation of ride quality when the car is unloaded.
