Aftermarket Temp-Gauge Sending unit / Sensor?
I have a 96 HO 4.0. And since day one my Temp Guage has never worked. I have been driving around for about 2 Years now with no idea what my engine Temp is, I have replaced the T-Stat Sensor, and replaced the Rear Driver side top valve cover Sending Unit for the factory Guage cluster. I have also swaped out the factory guage for another factory guage and still not working. So I figured the wiring has to be bad somewhere and don't feel like tracing it all down so I finally went out and baught a cheap Temp-Gauge from Pep-Boys. My question is the directions say you can't use the factory sending unit for the after market Gauge you have to use the one supplied. So can I just screw that in to the factory spot or do I need to use 1 of those "T" Fittings and run both the factory sending unit and aftermarket one? I know its a dumb question but I've never installed one of these before. I didn't know if the factory one runs through the ecu or not before it goes to the factory gauge? So if I unpuged it and tossed it would it harm anything?

Hey thanks for you reply. But unfortunately my factory gauge doesn't work so I can't run both. I'll just be running the aftermarket temp gauge. Do you know or anybody else know if I just toss the factory gauge sending unit and use the one supplied with the aftermarket gauge? Or do I have to run both on a "T" fitting? I just need to know if the factory sending unit has to still be plugged in? Does it run through the ECU before going to the factory gauge or does it just go straight to the factory gauge?

Just remove the factory sensor and screw in the aftermarket on. The sensor on the rear of the head is just for the temp gauge. I never had any issues with it other than reading alittle off but its better than nothing.

Hey thanx for your reply, that's exactly whag I needed to know. I was worried if I unplugged the factory sending unit in that location and didn't run the factory one that it might cause problems. Thanx I will be doing this when I get home from work tomorrow. I will screw the aftermarket one supplied with the gauge in that location and hope it works.

Hey Bud... did you complete this?
I have a 96 that the gauge is inoperative on, even with a new sender. Owner is up for an aftermarket gauge if theres no drawbacks to it.
Any issues with the ECU not picking up a temp signal? Or does it get it from the thermostat housing sender?

There should be two, one for the gauge and one for the computer to adj. Your fuel curve as the engine warms up. As long as you removed the one in the back of the head your good to go. The one in the therm housing needs to stay.
